Hello! My name is Keri McClanahan, and I am a special education teacher.
This is my 22nd year teaching at Heyworth. As a young student, I found myself
helping my classmates with math and reading when they needed it. My classmates
always told me that I would be a teacher some day because they knew that I enjoyed
helping others, especially children. It seems they knew me better than I knew
myself because I switched my major 4 times during my college career.
After I earned an Associate's Degree in Science from Illinois Valley Community
College, I transferred to Illinois State University where I earned a Bachelor's
Degree in Sociology. I spent some time working in foster care and
juvenile detention. During my time working at the juvenile detention center, I found
myself (once again) helping students with reading and math. So I decided to return
to school to get a degree in teaching. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Special
Education in 2002 from ISU, and I began teaching that same year at Heyworth.
While teaching, I earned a Master's Degree in Education Administration. I guess
I should have listened to my classmates all those years ago! I'm glad I finally found
my way to the field of education. I can't imagine myself in any other career!
When I'm not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family, and watching my
son, Bryson, play sports.
